Freight Brokers: Employees or Self-employment

When you are properly trained as a freight broker, you might ask: Can I work as an employee instead of being self-employed. The answer is that it IS difficult to find an "employee" position unless you have experience or a "following".

I get asked, "How can I get experience if no one will give me a job?"

Here is the thing. There are many, many freight brokers seeking freight brokers (not agents) who want to work as employees. I see ads almost everyday on the Internet on this. Despite most of them seeking experienced brokers, you might know a broker or know someone who knows a broker.

If this is the case, pursue the opportunity. You never will know unless you try. Some freight brokers may even pay for your training. These postions are NOT easy to find. But, again. If you pursue it, you might uncover a real gem.

Other than working as a freight broker employee, consider the self-employment route and explore your options there. Freight Broker Benchmarks

Years ago, I spent a lot of time analyzing stocks. At one time, I had over 40 specific items that I looked at to try and identify a stock that was on its way up. Out of the 40 or so items, I narrowed my focus to probably about fifteen.

These important items were benchmarks against which I analyzed the stock in its historic framework and I also compared a company's benchmarks with other companies in the same industry. The time and effort paid off.

Nearly every successful business owner has his or her focal points or benchmarks that are used to determine how they are progressing. The gross profit margin is one of the four benchmarks that, in my opinion, is important.

The gross profit margin is a percentage of what profit you have after you pay the truck divided by what the shipper is paying. Thus, if the shipper is paying you $1,500 for a load and if you have a $225 profit after paying the truck, your profit margin is 15% ($225/$1,500).

Freight Broker Negligence

Well, it happened again, unfortunately. A truck driver who was coming off a high, fell asleep, hit another truck and the truck driver who was inspecting his own truck. The truck driver near the roadside was killed.

Naturally, the driver coming off the high was primarily negligent. The court then found the freight broker who hired the trucking company negligent as well. It's called "vicarious negligence". Sort of like "second-hand" negligence.

The fact is the guilty trucking company did not have their proper authority or insurance.

Folks, there is no excuse for being negligent in hiring trucks. It takes only a few minutes to check the carrier out. Many freight brokers don't know they need to do this nor do they know how.

Freight Brokers Finding Customers

I wrote the other day about one of my broker agent clients finding a broker in the Denver area to work for. This broker has built a solid brokerage and supplemented it with a fleet of 20 trucks. My agent client is anxious to get in on the action.

Another freight broker client in Chicago has been planning for months now to get his broker authority after working in the construction industry for years. He will be buying one or several trucks in the near future and we will concentrate on getting loads for his trucks first of all. Later, he can broker loads to other trucks around the country. He just quit his full time job this week to work exclusively on his new ventures.

Then there is my other client in Indiana. He is, I think, a rather quiet guy. But he is going bonkers after making 9 phone calls to prospective customers. Five of them want his set-up package. He asked if this was good. I said, "This is awesome!".

Now these three clients are taking action. At some point, they said "No more sitting back. I'm going for it".

Freight Brokers and Trucking

Freight brokers and truckers go hand-in-hand like peas in a pod. Right? Wrong? Actually, both. Here's why. Many truckers deal with freight brokers every day for all their loads. Further, many truckers are becoming their OWN broker to cut out the middle man and put that money in their pocket.

It is a mistake, however, to think that just because you are in trucking that you know how to broker freight. There is a connection between brokering and trucking. Yet, there is a big difference as well.

Truckers move cargo AFTER someone else usually finds the cargo. Freight brokers, however, FIND the cargo and then FIND AND COORDINATE with the truck to move the cargo. This is a huge difference. The trucker focuses on moving the cargo - the broker focuses on coordinating the move between the shipper and the truck.

I often see other freight broker training schools focus much of their promotional material on TRUCKS and trucking. However, this is only half the story. They lose the focus on COORDINATING the move between two separate entities.

If you were to go to my website to learn about freight brokering, you would find little emphasis on TRUCKING and a whole ton of focus on BROKERS WHO ARE COORDINATING the move.

Freight Brokers Stuck in the Middle

Freight brokers operate in an envoronment of constant change and constraints. Freight brokering is no different than any other business in this respect.

Some of these changes and constraints come from the government, both state and federal. Specifically, increasing governmental regulation at the state level has far reaching effects and may actually backfire against the intended results.

There is an economic term called "elascity of demand" which measures how the demand for a product changes as the price changes. Some products with price changes have little effect on demand for the product. Some have a gigantic effect.

Then let's look at an example: the state of California. They have become increasingly burdensome on business by over regulating. So, the price of doing business goes up. The elascity is high because companies start relocating to states where there are fewer regulations and constraints. Fewer regulations mean lower costs which means a lower elasticity, so to speak.

In those states with a more pro business environment, like Texas for example, the effect of over regulation in other states is gaining new business due to others fleeing the highly regulated states.

It apalls me that those in power cannot see the effects of their actions. Regulators are trying to achieve certain effects (like going green) but they end up biting the hand that feeds them. It doesn't make sense.

We are in a time of very, very crucial balances where one slip one way or the other will upset the cart and new businesses and old will be reeling to find a foothold.

The end result, businesses will scramble to relocate to those areas of fewer constraints. And everyone gains but not after a struggle.
