Ever since 1995, which was the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII, I have had a growing interest in learning more about our country and its foundation. History, the economy, and politics has been the main points of interest for me.
Today I read that the Statue of Liberty will be closed for some time for a $27 million dollar upgrade. And, I recalled another story of how the Statue of Liberty was resurrected from the dead, so to speak.
France gave up the Statue of Liberty to the USA to symbolize their friendship during the American Revolution. Many of the founders of our Constitution were well versed in the ideas espoused by the French Englightenment writers - the chief among them - individual liberty.
A man by the name of Joseph Pulitzer played a large role in resurrecting the Statue of Liberty. He was not alone and if it had not been for the patience, time, effort and monetary sacrifices of thousands of people, their would be no Statue today.
More on this in Part II.
