For most of my professional life, I have been a research nut. It began with accounting and then doing some investment research and analysis involving numbers and percentages.
It eventually went on to include research for business start ups as I began servicing small business clients many years ago. You know - where do you go to get information on licenses, marketing, accounting, etc.
Freight brokering was the first venture I ran across that was sort of different. Yes, you are in a sales position as you work with customers. But, you don't have to "sell yourself" in the traditional sense.
Here is my take on it and this is what I stress in our training. You do not have to possess a lot of sales "skills" as much as you need to possess a sales "mentality". A sales mentality will keep you going when others give up.
I believe your road to success will be better served in becoming a "research hound" rather than spending a lot of time and money on your sales skills. If you can work smart to search and identify customers who are ready, willing and able to work with you - you automatically lessen the pressure in being a "sales" person.
In our training, we do just that - we help you become a research hound that will help you go where others are not going. It will help you uncover customers who are not being called by every freight broker in the country.
And when you latch on to these types of customers, believe me, THEY will be pursuing YOU rather than your having to go through all sorts of sales hoopla.
