Freight Broker Training: Telephone/Online vs Live Classroom
There are two methods for learning how to become a freight broker (other than on-the-job training). First, a person can attend a live classroom setting. And second, a person can train over the telephone and Internet. Which is best?
The best is whatever works for you. Some people would never consider training over the telephone and Internet - they want to "feel and touch" their instructors. And, that's fine. In years past, I was the same way being a professional seminar-goer.
But here are a few pros and cons:
With live training, you can talk directly to your trainer, you can sometimes see a real, live freight brokerage in operation, sometimes you can call on shippers or carriers during your training, you can meet other students and talk to them, plus more. These are some of the pros, in my opinion.
With telephone and online training, you can still get quality training depending upon the trainer's experience and how well they have packaged the materials, you can meet one-on-one over the phone without competing with anyone else, you can save enough money that would allow you to take a nice 2-3 week trip to Phoenix or Las Vegas, you can get unlimited support after formal training, plus more. These are some of the pros, in my opinion.
Here is what you want to watch out for in classroom training: are you going to be competing with others if you have questions and are your really going to benefit from questions that others have? Are you just going to be used as "cheap labor" where you will be spending a day or more doing nothing but trying to find trucks on the phone? It should not take you more than an hour or so to learn how to make a proper phone call. You don't need to spend all day or longer. Is your trainer currently brokering (if so, how do they have time to train you)? If not currently brokering, have they run their own brokerage in the past? If you train with a brokerage and if they say they will show you where the "action" is - why would they be giving away this information? No one is going to give away their favorite sources of income - no one.
Here is what you want to watch our for with telephone/online training: are you getting trained from someone who has had real freight broker experience? Are you going to get trained from someone who spends most of their working hours preparing proper materials for you based upon both their actual experience and current research? Are you going to get unlimited support after formal training? Perhaps, most importantly, are you getting training on not only HOW to become a freight broker but HOW to run a business? Will you learn about some of the legal, financial and credit issues that are unique to freight brokers?
Freight brokering and freight broker training are big steps for most people. I encourage you to view our website and blog. Read through the material including the free or low-cost items. Ask yourself - am I receiving value RIGHT NOW without having to spend a nickle? Then go to other websites and compare. First, determine if you are receiving value RIGHT NOW before you spend a nickle. Then, compare our website with those that are indicating you can make big bucks the first year. If you believe that, you will believe anything. You CAN make big bucks, but most likely you will spend several years in the process.
